My name is Ella, and I’m the artist and patternmaker behind Double Ugly Studio.
As a lifelong lover of textiles, it was only a matter of time before I started sewing my own clothes. I learned patternmaking in order to create garments I truly wanted in my wardrobe. Selecting fabrics and turning them into functional pieces of clothing for myself and my loved ones has brought me so much delight. I’m excited to now bring my patterns to the clever minds of sewists.
It is my belief that anyone can sew their own clothes. With the prevalence of fast fashion, it’s easy to forget that clothing is made by hand. By taking your wardrobe (or even one shirt!) into your own hands, you’re creating some good for the world. Whether your stitches are wonky or impeccable, there is so much pride to be taken in a garment you made yourself.
“Double Ugly” is an ode to my grandfather, Eli. He worked as a milkman until life made him change course, and he became a fabric salesman (the best in NYC, in my humble opinion). He was charismatic and kind, a true people-person. Through him, I learned to appreciate travel, art, food, and good company. Eli was a jokester, and one of his favorite ways to introduce two people was to say with a grin, “Now, this guy is ugly, and this one is double ugly!”. This playful joke and Eli’s zest for life are reminders to be lighthearted and to simply enjoy. Harnessing this spirit, Double Ugly Studio is my happy offering to you.
